Defining the terms

Much confusion has occurred because of differing terminology used by different professionals to describe children with developmental disorders . Some professionals use specific learning difficulties;learning disorders;developmental disorders for example. Different countries have different terms to describe dyslexia and reading difficulties. The use of developmental co-ordination disorder and dyspraxia cause endless confusion.

How disability is defined can also vary from professional group to professional group and can cause differences in access to provision and support, and huge confusion for parents trying to access services for their children.

Deciding on who undertakes which role in an interdisciplinary setting, where most developmental disorders overlap is essential.
